What are Paypal webhooks?
PayPal processes payments for merchants in more than 200 markets. Its webhooks tell your app when a payment is captured, a refund goes through, a subscription changes, or a dispute opens.
Testing them usually means a sandbox app and test checkouts — and sandbox deliveries can lag. This page skips all of that: a live URL plus real sample payloads for every common event.
How do Paypal webhooks work?
- Delivered as HTTPS POST requests with a JSON body — event_type is upper case, like PAYMENT.CAPTURE.COMPLETED...
- Signed with RSA-SHA256, not a shared secret — verify PAYPAL-TRANSMISSION-SIG with PayPal's certificate and the raw body.
- Respond 2xx promptly. PayPal retries up to 25 times over 3 days, on a backoff schedule it doesn't publish.
- Events can arrive out of order — a refund before its capture — so order by create_time and dedupe on id.
